I read somewhere that Nixon was fully aware that his price controls were voodoo economics (to borrow a phrase), but that he reasoned that he had to be seen to be doing something and that most voters would not understand the futility of the action he took. Nowadays, politicians seem entirely performative, but it's really nothing new.

That is the most bizarre interpretation of an externality I have seen. Essentially classing an externality as 'any microeconomic variable changing that moves a macro variable in a way I don't like'.

Also a whiff of MMT in this; placing fiscal measures as the central (only?) response to inflation and too much money in the economy.

Thanks for the takedown of this total nonsense.
